ADOPTION 101
This is just some tid bits of information that sometimes are not thought about when seeking out a new family member. Hope you use this as a guide to your new fur kid.
CAT VS KITTEN
Yes we all love kittens. From their cuteness to their innocence. However it is not always in the kitten or persons best interest to get a kitten. I will go over the many reasons why.
Many times people know what they want their cat to be like, you do not know how a kitten will turn out:
Kittens are like children, they grow up and change along the way, Their appearance changes and their personality changes. With a cat you know what it will look like for life and you will already know its personality.
Cats have both dependent and independent personalities. This usually starts appearing at 6 months of age but you fully don't know until they are full grown. Some 6 month old kittens exhibit an independent personality because they are too busy exploring to calm down, once they pass this stage of life they show who they truly are.
You would not want to adopt a cat with a dependent personality if you are not home most of the day. These types of cats are very needy and will demand more attention than what you may want to get them. A cat with an independent personality would best suit this situation.
If you want a cat that you want to love on all the time you want a dependent cat as they love to be held, petted and talked to all the time.
Elderly people should definitely not have a kitten or an independent cat. Dependent cats and elderly people are a perfect match as the cat will get more one on one time with their owners and are usually treated like babies, dependent cats love that.

MALE VS FEMALE
So many times I have heard "I didn't know there was a personality difference in the genders"
I have been around cats the majority of my life and I prefer male cats over female due to how much more loving the males are. Females have the typical "I will love on you when I want to" attitude. Now running the cat shelter I deal with males and females all day long. And the majority of my favorites are males because though all animals love you unconditionally males seems to be the first ones with head butts, kisses and meows saying hold me. Now don't get me wrong, I own both genders and some of my females do have that loving personality that my males do, but that does come and go with them and I have a few male cats that are independent all the way around and exhibit the female loving factor as I like to call it. These male cats act the same as the females as they could care less if I am here as long as they are fed. But those are so far and few in between. This is just another characteristic trait I wanted to point out that I have observed as a cat owner.
